Visual Arts at CCSS

Visual Arts is the study of two and three dimensional traditional arts. The four main media of traditional visual arts are drawing, painting, sculpture, and printmaking. At Clarington Central, Visual Arts is offered at four grade levels, along with two specialized courses that focus on specific media for senior-level students. Junior Courses focus on exploring a range of artistic media and art theory. Senior Courses focus on self as the artist, pairing opportunities for independent projects with greater detailed lessons on media and theory.

Visual Arts Courses by Grade Level

Grades 9 & 10

Visual Arts at the grade nine and ten level are foundational courses, where students engage in the creative process to make their own artworks while learning foundational skills through exploring visual arts across a range of media, techniques, and a survey of past artworks.听

AVI 10: Students create art following prompts that are designed to support them while they explore a range of media and techniques, as well as learn about art history lessons. Most often, grade nine follows a chronological timeline, starting with Paleolithic Art. Examples of grade nine art.

AVI 20: Students create art following prompts to explore a range of media and techniques, as well as learn about art history. Most often, grade ten studies art history through the lens of learning about and from Canadian artists. Examples of grade ten art.

Grades 11 & 12

Visual Arts at the senior level takes a few different forms at CCSS.

Core Visual Arts at the grade eleven and twelve explore techniques and skills started in earlier grades, and often more choice for students to engage in the creative process independently.

Specialty Visual Art courses only run at the senior level, and explore the creative process as well as media specific technical skills and terminology through the lens of a specific media.听 At CCSS, we听currently offer a sculpture course as well as a photography class.听

AVI 3M听and听AVI 4M are Core Visual Arts Courses: students refine skills learned in both or either earlier courses, and focus on creating their own creative voice and building a portfolio.听 Examples of grade eleven art and examples of grade twelve art.

Sculpture (AWP 3O) and Photography (AWQ 4M) are specialized courses offered at CCSS for students to focus on a specific medium for the length of the course. Examples of sculptures and examples of photography

In sculpture, students explore a range of traditional and contemporary sculpture media, including hand building with earthenware clay, to more contemporary methods.听

In photography, students engage in the modern print medium of photography through studying its history, as well techniques, terminology and contemporary use of the medium.听

Arts and Culture' Specialized High Skills Major (SHSM)

CCSS offers an 'Arts and Culture' Specialized High Skills Major (SHSM) program, which provides and funds extra opportunities for grade 11 and 12 arts students to provide opportunities for art activities.
Recently, SHSM students have engaged in Stage Fighting, as well as had their AGO trip paid for.

Extracurricular Art Groups

Art Club: Once a week, during lunch, students meet with their peers and teacher advisors and participate in bonus opportunities to explore art.听

Yearbook Committee: Yearbook' meets to plan taking and collecting photographs, as well as planning the aesthetics, and layout of the yearbook itself.听

Additional Opportunities in the Art Department

The Arts are a pillar of the CCSS community.听

For Visual Arts, we have a one night exhibition in the Winter and Spring as a part of our Arts Nights.听

New to this year, we are working on creating a publication, to highlight the artistic abilities of our senior students, and provide professional experience for their CVs.听

The Visual Art Department also offers a biannual Art Gallery of Ontario field trip, in which students can explore the famous downtown Toronto gallery around halfway through the semester with their fellow art students.听
